A Day in the Life of a Mountain Explorer
8:20–8:45 | Arrival & Invitations
Children enter to several possibilities rather than an assignment.
There might be clay and pinecones in the Atelier, animal tracks displayed at the Discovery table, blocks from yesterday's unfinished structure, books about snow, and drawing materials near the window.
Teachers greet each child individually.
Children choose where to begin.
8:45–9:05 | Morning Gathering
Short.
Songs, greetings, calendar/weather when meaningful, sharing, and the day's big question:
“What changed outside overnight?”
“Where do you think our water goes when it freezes?”
“Yesterday we found those tracks. What should we investigate today?”
Children help shape the plan.
9:05–10:30 | Outdoor Exploration & Adventure
This is sacred time.
Boots on.
Children move onto the trails, forest, playground, greenhouse, pavilion or frog pond.
Some days there is an intention.
Other days:
“Let's explore.”
10:30–10:50 | Snack & Conversation
Children participate in routines—serving, counting, helping, cleaning and talking.
This is community-building and practical independence.
10:50–11:30 | Choice Time / Projects / Atelier
Long uninterrupted play and project time.
Children choose interest areas.
Teachers may invite three or four children at a time into a brief intentional experience involving sounds, letters, counting, patterning, number concepts, drawing or fine-motor development.
Nobody stops an extraordinary block construction because “math time is starting.”
The block construction may be math time.
11:30–12:30 | Recess / Lunch with MSW Community
Whenever possible, Mountain Explorers interact with the larger school.
Older buddies.
Shared lunch.
A fifth grader reading with them.
Community Meeting.
A school performance.
A visiting speaker.
12:30–1:00 | Story Workshop / Read-Aloud
Excellent children's literature every day.
Sometimes simply for joy.
Sometimes connected to an investigation.
Children predict, wonder, retell, dramatize and talk about characters and ideas.
1:00–1:30 | Rest, Quiet & Reset
Rest mats, books, drawing, quiet music or another peaceful choice depending upon each child's needs.
1:30–2:20 | Investigation / Creation
This might happen in the Atelier, greenhouse, woods or classroom.
Children continue something that has emerged:
Building a model shelter.
Creating clay frogs.
Planting seeds.
Making maps of the trail.
Cooking.
Painting snow with natural pigments.
Interviewing the custodian about where water goes.
2:20–2:50 | Community / Movement / Specials
Depending on the day:
PE.
Music.
STEAM.
Older buddies.
Community Meeting.
Whole-school adventure.
Or another trip outside because it's simply too beautiful to stay in.
2:50–3:10 | Reflection
A very Reggio-inspired moment.
“What did you discover today?”
“What are you still wondering?”
A teacher may photograph a structure, write down a child's statement or save a drawing.
Those observations influence tomorrow.
3:10–Dismissal | Outdoor Play & Goodbye
End outdoors whenever practical.
Movement. Friendship. Imagination. Play.
And hopefully somebody climbs into the car saying:
“You won't believe what we found today.”
