COMMUNITY IMMERSIONS

Community is a huge part of the success of The Mountain School. Our goal is not only for our students to be strong learners but also civically engaged in the community in which they live. We want to be part of the greater community working with and giving back to those around us. The school seeks more Winhall/Stratton and Southern Vermont Communities partnerships. Please reach out if you have ideas or would like the students of The Mountain School to help do service with your organization.

Guest Immersions

The Mountain School at Winhall welcomes local artists, musicians, industry experts, and other business owners to join our school community for the day to share their expertise with students to further enrich their educational experience at MSW. Past guest immersions have included a learning to code video games with an expert from Google, famed New Orleans jazz musician Glen David Andrews leading music workshops, Uncharted Wild teaching students about exotic animals, and the Missoula Theater Company hosting acting workshops.

Thanks to a Vermont Arts Council Grant for the 2023-2024 school year MSW has welcomed Susan Haefner as our Actor in Residence hosting the Hero Project in conjunction with Yellow House Studio and the Weston Theater Company.

Long Trail Cleanup

Students take to the trails in the fall and spring on two separate days, equipped with hoes and great determination and brawn, to help clear and clean water bars. This annual community service project has become a yearly, tradition for students in the upper grades at MSW. Marge Fish, of the Green Mountain Club, is the coordinator for area volunteers, guiding students and adults alike to do much needed maintenance projects on sections of the Long Trail. Students go out in all weather conditions to do this volunteer work and have learned to be prepared with proper boots, clothing, and packs with water and food for their work day.

Winhall Stratton Community Food Shelf

Members of the 6th grade spend time on many Fridays helping out the local food shelf. Students head over to the Winhall Community Arts Center and help to stock the Winhall Stratton Community Food Shelf located right next to the Arts Center. This service time gives students and opportunity to give back in a tangible way each week and offers students to look beyond themselves in helping the community.

Green Up Day

Green Up Day began in April 1970 and continues as a unique Vermont tradition, bringing out thousands of volunteers throughout the state to remove litter and trash from our roadways, waterways, and public spaces. Annually, students take part in this Vermont tradition each year.

Art for the Sky Immersion - Fall 2023

Oregon based artist Daniel Dancer spent three days at The Mountain School at Winhall working with students to create an original large living art installation at the school featuring over 100 students, staff, family members, and community friends.
