Dear Guests,
Thank you for visiting The Mountain School at Winhall's website and the Headmaster's Page. The Mountain School at Winhall (MSW) is a small independent school nestled in the Green Mountains of southern Vermont. Friends and family have asked me, "What is The Mountain School like?" No description is more accurate than that of a prospective parent on a tour..."It's so organic." MSW's approach to learning is pure and natural. Students learn via thematic units in a creative, experiential environment. Using few textbooks, faculty and students capitalize on the information around them to learn and grow. What a refreshing place where the child - not testing and statutes - is center stage.
My wife and I moved to Vermont seven summers ago to find a simpler life. And while simpler is not always easier, we have enjoyed every minute of it. When not at school, we enjoy our time working at our farm, Fox Run Farm, as well as canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing and horseback riding. Suzanne also enjoys creative cooking and canning using our own organic products, and I spend my spare time building (currently a new chicken coop), writing, and doing consulting work. We count ourselves fortunate to call Vermont - and The Mountain School - home.
I have had many professional experiences which have led me to MSW. I was a middle school teacher and administrator in Ohio and Florida for eight years, and am now excited to be in my eighth year at The Mountain School. My 15 years of professional experience in education have taught me many things, which is why I so value education...we never stop learning. I look forward to learning through another year with such an outstanding group of trustees, staff, teachers, parents and students as those at MSW.
I have created four links for you to peruse to help you get to know me more. These links are:
1. The Headmaster's Goals;
2. The Monthly "Word from the Headmaster" (found in the monthly edition of The Catamount);
3. The Headmaster's Report; and
4. Consulting Work.
Please feel free to contact me at any time should you have questions, comments, or ideas to share. Thank you for your interest in The Mountain School. I hope you are able to come and visit our school family. It is truly...Beyond the Ordinary!
Daren M. Houck, M.Ed.
